HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – On Sept. 5, the Tennessee Ice Vols took on the University of North Carolina Tar Heels in their first game of the season, falling 6-0.
While players and coaches alike were excited to get back on the ice in a game setting, it was clear that improvements are needed in several aspects of play.
The Ice Vols opened the game with a fast-paced, high-energy first period. Sarting goalie Lincoln Simons saw significant action throughout the period, with several notable saves for his team.
Fans felt hopeful as the Ice Vols entered their first power play of the season at 6:13. Though determined to capitalize on the man advantage, Tennessee struggled to connect passes and could not produce a goal.
As play continued, the Ice Vols still struggled to keep up with Tar Heel offense, allowing a goal at 14:02 by sophomore Kevin Ma, giving UNC a 1-0 lead.
The second period began with noticeable tension on the ice and frantic plays from both teams. Although both Tennessee and North Carolina had several power play opportunities, neither converted.
Simons continued to contribute with big saves, but the Ice Vols’ defense had trouble containing the quick Tar Heel offense. Freshman Jake Sangster added another goal for UNC at 16:12, making it 2-0.
Several Tennessee players had breakaway opportunities throughout the period, but their shots did not find the back of the net.
Junior Tyler Iles opened the third period with aggressive, quick shots off the faceoff, yet the Ice Vols continued to fall short against a solid Tar Heel defense. North Carolina added three more goals in the third period, securing a 6-0 victory.
With excitement still buzzing for the return of college hockey, the Ice Vols look to bounce back as they travel to Lexington to face Kentucky on Sept. 6 for their second game of the season on the road.
