PALHEM, Ala. – The Tennessee Ice Vols secured a 3-1 win over the Alabama Frozen Tide.
After suffering a 6-2 loss to Virginia Tech in their previous matchup, Tennessee entered the game eager to get back in the win column. While that urgency wasn’t immediately evident, the Ice Vols ultimately delivered.
The first period started as a seemingly even matchup between the Division I Frozen Tide and the Division II Ice Vols. However, Alabama struck first, with defenseman Austin Fink capitalizing on an Alabama power play to score at 4:35, giving the Frozen Tide a 1-0 lead.
Despite failing to score in the opening period, Tennessee generated numerous offensive opportunities, outshooting Alabama 24-8. The Ice Vols struggled to convert but demonstrated strong positioning and pressure in the offensive zone.
In the second period, Tennessee adjusted and took more calculated shots. Goaltender Patrick Green shut down Alabama’s offense, keeping the game within reach. Forward Matt Pavek broke through late in the period, scoring at 17:49 off an assist from captain Connor Frazer to tie the game at 1-1.
Tennessee found their rhythm as they entered the third period. At 7:04, Henry Cohen found the back of the net to give the Ice Vols a 2-1 lead. Just two minutes later, forward Jake Premo added an insurance goal, extending the lead to 3-1.
“We knew we could win this game,” Pavek said. “It just took all three periods to get there.”
Green continued his strong performance in goal, holding Alabama scoreless for the remainder of the game and sealing the win for Tennessee.
Looking ahead, the Ice Vols aim to improve on creating and sustaining leads earlier in games, as well as knowing when to raise the urgency.
“We have been in a slump, and it feels good to get one back,” Pavek said. “Good morale with the team, and we are looking forward to next week.”
Tennessee returns home to Knoxville, where they will host Tampa on Oct. 10 and Oct. 12 at the Coliseum.
