LEXINGTON, Ky – On Sept. 6 the Tennessee Ice Vols took on the Kentucky Wildcats, but
were unable to secure a win.
Coming off of a tough loss against North Carolina, the Ice Vols were determined to make
changes on the ice going into this late-night matchup. While notable improvements were
made, the Ice Vols still struggled to add to the board.
Captain and senior Connor Frazer said that his team clicked better than the previous night.
“Yesterday, I think our communication and our jive together overall was not amazing,” said
Frazer. “Today, I think we were able to gel a little bit better together”
The Ice Vols started the game with big hits and aggressive play. Approaching play differently
in contrast to the previous night, the Vols took any opportunity to slow down play early on in
the game. They were able to gain much-needed control of the puck, take smart shots, and
connect passes compared to Kentucky’s frantic play.
With tensions increasing and game turning physical, both teams managed several shots on
goal. Tennessee’s Patrick Green was able to hold off Kentucky’s shots with impressive
saves until 18:49, when Anthony Santangelo scored giving Kentucky the 1-0 lead.
Tennessee came into the second period regaining the same control they harvested during
the previous period. Their control and quick passing benefited greatly giving Frazer the
opportunity to score from a breakaway, evening up the score 1-1 and giving the Ice Vols
their first goal of the season.
The Ice Vols’ lead was short-lived as Kentucky’s Ty Patefield added another point to the
board for the Wildcats making the score 2-1. As play continued, both teams began
capitalizing on their physicality, facing much time in the penalty box for roughing.
During the third period, Green continued to make important saves in the net. However, the
Ice Vols failed to put up any points, while also allowing two goals from the Wildcats,
solidifying a final score of 4-1.
When reflecting on their second game of the season, Frazer feels confident that his team
has the tools they need to excel.
“There were a lot of times where we would shoot it high and shoot to score, and in turn gave
a free breakout for them,” said Frazer. “Our leadership group is good, and I think we’ll be
able to bounce back against West Virgina at home.
”Returning back to Knoxville, the Ice Vols are eager to take on West Virgina at home Sept. 19,
knowing what areas need improvement - and what strengths to capitalize on.
